Music and lights

The thing every date-night video forgets. The volume rule, the two-hour playlist, three safe directions, and which lights go off.

We read the transcripts of the eight most-watched date-night cooking videos online. About thirty thousand words. The word music appears zero times. The word clean appears once. Nobody covers this part, so here it is.

Silence is the only thing in an apartment that is genuinely hard to fix once she is in it. Turning music on after she has sat down looks like you forgot. Turning it on at T-10 looks like it was always on.

The volume rule

You can talk over it without raising your voice. That is the whole rule. If you have to lean in, it is too loud. If you can hear the gap between songs, it is too quiet. Set it at T-10, walk to the front door, say a sentence out loud, and adjust. Yes, out loud, alone. It is cheaper than finding out at 7:40.

Two hours long

The playlist has to outlast dinner. A forty-minute playlist dies while you are carrying plates, and then you are the man who got up from the table to look at his phone. Pick one that runs at least two hours, and then never touch it again.

Three directions that work

We do not hand out track lists. Your taste is yours, and a playlist with the words date night in the title is exactly what we are trying to avoid. Pick one direction and stay in it all night.

  • Old soul and jazz vocals. Warm, familiar, and nobody in history has been offended by it. The default if you are not sure.
  • Quiet instrumental: piano, guitar, a film score without the explosions. Fills the room without asking for attention.
  • Something you actually listen to, at the mellow end of it. If she asks what this is, you should be able to answer. That conversation is worth more than the perfect playlist.

Avoid anything with a drop, anything you would play at the gym, and anything so obscure you will feel the need to explain it.

Lights

Your phone

Silent. Face down. Not on the table. If the music comes from it, set it up and put it where you cannot see it. The oven timer is the only reason to touch it tonight, and you will hear that from the next room.
